when i started print & pattern way back in march 2007 i was very keen not to use my real name. with the artist banksy in mind i wanted to operate undercover, especially as i snooped around stores with my little spy camera looking for fab examples of design. so i adopted 'bowie style' as a username after a book on my hero david bowie, and have used this as a pen name ever since. that is until i came to a produce a book, and i found out that through copyright laws i would need to add my real name to protect my rights and those of all the contributors. so in the hardest post i have ever had to write i have to finally reveal a bit about myself. not easy for me. my name is marie perkins and for the last two years i've been designing under the studio name 'inkjet designs'. what began as a fun side project to own an etsy shop soon led to me leaving my textile design job in order to go freelance.i did an interview with the british newspaper 'the independent on sunday' last week and i was worried they would use my real name before i had a chance to tell you in person - hence im doing it today. we will have a double page spread in their magazine this sunday and they are picking images from the book themselves so im not sure which designs they'll choose. thanks for reading : ) here are some little examples of my own work....

Pleased to "meet" you Marie!
I've enjoyed your blog for a while...congrats on being published! :)
Hi Marie... its so nice to meet you :) I'd just like to say that print & pattern is such a great read and your work is great!
What a big step that you have had to take... I hope though that it may have "taken a weight off your shoulders"?
... and a gorgeous book too, how exciting!
and I'm looking forward to reading your magazine article on Sunday too.
With best wishes to you, Louise
Wow,
You're incredible!! Not only do you have the best blog in the world, you're also a fabulous designer!! I love your work and don't know how you find time to achieve what you're doing!! What a total inspiration you are! Can't wait to see the article and see more of your fab inkjet designs! Thank you!!!!
Congratulations! This must be a huge weight off your shoulders! I absolutley love your blog. I follow it religiously every morning. I gained a 2.1in surface pattern and international textiles in 1999! It's been years since I've done any work. I've lost a bit of confidence and I also have children too although this is no excuse!! Thanks to your fabulous blog I am slowly getting my act together. You are an insperation and a great example to us all. Many many thanks for all that you do for the wonderful world of surface pattern!!!
Congratulations! Thank you Marie for being an endless source of daily inspiration. Your blog is the first thing I log on to every single morning before I start work. I have made contacts from your jobs pages and have been inspired to start blogging myself and also go freelance too.
Can't wait to buy the book, and I shall read your article this weekend, you deserve the recognition for all your hard work and dedication to print design. Happy blogging and designing for years to come.
Nice to meet you Marie. I look forward to the book. Like you, I've not wanted to use my real name on my blog (my day job is in Court and I don't want the 'wrong' people to google me. However, I've shared my name this week with my readers with it typed on a design rather than to write it on my blog. Best wishes with the book, I will definitely be looking for the paper on Sunday.
dear marie
finaly a name behind the blog :)
best of luck with the book!
I've been following your blog for a while now - your own designs are really something. Can you tell me how your designs will be used? I sew and I'm a sucker for grafic prints and patterns so I'm hoping for fabric.
In your hunt for different prints and patterns have you by any chance come across a website with cool printed paper napkins? I've recently started a new project where I use printed napkins in pictures, but I'd love to find some cool special ones.
Thanks for you time.

Hi Marie
How lovely to finally meet you!, will keep a look out for the article, can't wait for the book!
Hello Marie !
Congrats on the Independent feature.
Liking your work - love the ipod flowers !
Hi Marie, how lovely to find out a bit about you, I'll definately look for the article on Sunday, congratulations in advance!
: )
Hi Marie! You know it really is nice to know who you are at last. It makes your wonderful blog feel more personal. And your own work is amazing. I can sense how hard it was for you to put your own designs up. You're too modest! Coming out is the best way to describe it. Will look forward to hearing more about your book.
Anonymity is a much underrated state, isn't it? I totally sympathise with you on this point especially as you've had to reveal your identity out of necessity rather than real choice. However, your work is absolutely beautiful and now your real identity will be forever connected to something wonderful, so maybe it's not so bad!
Best wishes :)
This is the biggest thing since Michael Jackson died! Very exciting, LOVE your work!
Hello marie! It's so nice to see your work and your lovely inkjet designs, I'm glad you 'came out'!! Looking forward to seeing your interview in the independent! x
I love the third print!
I don't reveal my full name on my blog, although it has been in print in a magazine a couple of times.
I know it must have seemed kind of strange to "come out".
I hope it is better than you thought - Congratulations on the book.
Wow, a big day! Hope it doesn't turn out to be too scary. Perhaps it will also bring some of your 'anonymous readers' (like me!) out of the woodwork. It's actually really great to hear your story, inspiring too. Thanks for sharing.
And best of luck with the book, and your new role as author/surface pattern ambassador!

Marie -
I've known your name because of our Orla Kiely for Target exchange, but I almost fell out of my chair to find out that you are inkjet designs! I *LOVE* that Etsy shop, I own one of your pocket mirrors and I always wished that the person behind inkjet would blog more, because I love the patterns and I love getting that once-in-a-blue-moon blog post by inkjet in my Google reader. I am shaking my head - I can't believe that's you!
Congrats on the book. Print & Pattern is and probably will always be my favorite blog.

Hi Marie, I really don't know where you find the time to do all your fab work! Both your P&P blog and your design business are such great and inspiring achievements. It all makes sense now that Inkjet is yours! You totally know your stuff and work really hard so you should be able to take full credit and enjoy it! I read your blog every day, its such a great resourse for designers, students and creatives. You do a great job and have a great eye for amazing work so thanks and keep up the good work :) Im off to buy the paper now!
Hi Marie! I read your blog everyday so it is a pleasure to finally put a name to my favourite blog ever :0) I am off to buy the Independent on Sunday now!!
I have been reading your blog since the summer of 2007 whilst at uni studying textile design. I remember it was like someone turning a light on inside my head when I stumbled across a post on Shinzi Katoh and you have been a constant source of inspiration ever since! I am so amazed that you are Inkjet designs, I always wondered why injet designs weren't featured on p&p so much because it seemed right up your street and now i realise why! Congratulations on everything you have achieved and most of all a big THANKYOU for everything you have given us!
Nice to meet you - and congratulations!
How nice to finally find out your identity! Your blog and design work are an inspiration - thankyou very much for showing it! I hope you will publish the article on your blog as I wasn't able to buy the paper today.
Loved the article today! Congratulations on your 'outing'!! xxx
Nice to meet you, at last! It makes total sense that you are inkjet designs - one of my long-time etsy favourites. Even if 'coming out' may have been forced rather than something you were planning to do, I am sure that just as with everything else in life, it will bring about new opportunities you didn't know existed.
Too terrific to finally know a bit about the gal behind one of our favorite blogs ever!
Inkjet Designs is fabulous - your designs are great. I've followed Print&Pattern for quite some time and I absolutely love everything you do.
Congrats on all of your success with both Print&Pattern & Inkjet Designs - no doubt there is plenty more success to come..!

I completely understand. I am in that phase myself, but nice to know I've got three years before I 'come out'. :)
Meanwhile ... *gorgeous* work, and congratulations on the interview.

Thank you for sharing your story Marie - I am yet another of the many hundreds and thousands of readers who check your blog first thing in the morning for a dose of inspiration! Print and Pattern is always a wonderful read, and I'm sure your book will be much loved here in Australia.
Holy Smokes! I've been away for a few days & was finally catching up on all the posts I've missed... Who knew I would be knocked over with so much BIG news! The P&P book has arrived & your secret identity has been revealed!!! WOW... That's a lot to take in.
I'm sure it feels a bit strange to come out from behind the curtain & let everyone know who you are, but at the same time... you deserve all the recognition you can get. Your blog is a daily source of inspiration for so many of us & your design work is phenomenal (of course)! I wasn't surprised to find out that your etsy shop has been one of my favorites for a long time now :)
Well Marie... It's great to finally meet the real girl behind the blog! Congrats on all the latest article in the paper & of course... THE BOOK! I can't wait to get my hands on a copy of it!
this is a very different coming out story than my own, but yours is much more fun... nice to know the real-ish you.. and i love the name, its so old fashioned and cute, if thats not offensive and condescending to say..xx
Your work is nice.
