DESIGNS............

when i started print & pattern way back in march 2007 i was very keen not to use my real name. with the artist banksy in mind i wanted to operate undercover, especially as i snooped around stores with my little spy camera looking for fab examples of design. so i adopted 'bowie style' as a username after a book on my hero david bowie, and have used this as a pen name ever since. that is until i came to a produce a book, and i found out that through copyright laws i would need to add my real name to protect my rights and those of all the contributors. so in the hardest post i have ever had to write i have to finally reveal a bit about myself. not easy for me. my name is marie perkins and for the last two years i've been designing under the studio name 'inkjet designs'. what began as a fun side project to own an etsy shop soon led to me leaving my textile design job in order to go freelance.

i did an interview with the british newspaper 'the independent on sunday' last week and i was worried they would use my real name before i had a chance to tell you in person - hence im doing it today. we will have a double page spread in their magazine this sunday and they are picking images from the book themselves so im not sure which designs they'll choose. thanks for reading : ) here are some little examples of my own work....

Congratulations! This must be a huge weight off your shoulders! I absolutley love your blog. I follow it religiously every morning. I gained a 2.1in surface pattern and international textiles in 1999! It's been years since I've done any work. I've lost a bit of confidence and I also have children too although this is no excuse!! Thanks to your fabulous blog I am slowly getting my act together. You are an insperation and a great example to us all. Many many thanks for all that you do for the wonderful world of surface pattern!!!

Congratulations! Thank you Marie for being an endless source of daily inspiration. Your blog is the first thing I log on to every single morning before I start work. I have made contacts from your jobs pages and have been inspired to start blogging myself and also go freelance too.

Can't wait to buy the book, and I shall read your article this weekend, you deserve the recognition for all your hard work and dedication to print design. Happy blogging and designing for years to come.

Nice to meet you Marie. I look forward to the book. Like you, I've not wanted to use my real name on my blog (my day job is in Court and I don't want the 'wrong' people to google me. However, I've shared my name this week with my readers with it typed on a design rather than to write it on my blog. Best wishes with the book, I will definitely be looking for the paper on Sunday.

I've been following your blog for a while now - your own designs are really something. Can you tell me how your designs will be used? I sew and I'm a sucker for grafic prints and patterns so I'm hoping for fabric.

In your hunt for different prints and patterns have you by any chance come across a website with cool printed paper napkins? I've recently started a new project where I use printed napkins in pictures, but I'd love to find some cool special ones.

Thanks for you time.

Hi Marie! You know it really is nice to know who you are at last. It makes your wonderful blog feel more personal. And your own work is amazing. I can sense how hard it was for you to put your own designs up. You're too modest! Coming out is the best way to describe it. Will look forward to hearing more about your book.

Anonymity is a much underrated state, isn't it? I totally sympathise with you on this point especially as you've had to reveal your identity out of necessity rather than real choice. However, your work is absolutely beautiful and now your real identity will be forever connected to something wonderful, so maybe it's not so bad!
Best wishes :)

I don't reveal my full name on my blog, although it has been in print in a magazine a couple of times.

I know it must have seemed kind of strange to "come out".

I hope it is better than you thought - Congratulations on the book.

Wow, a big day! Hope it doesn't turn out to be too scary. Perhaps it will also bring some of your 'anonymous readers' (like me!) out of the woodwork. It's actually really great to hear your story, inspiring too. Thanks for sharing.

And best of luck with the book, and your new role as author/surface pattern ambassador!

Marie -

I've known your name because of our Orla Kiely for Target exchange, but I almost fell out of my chair to find out that you are inkjet designs! I *LOVE* that Etsy shop, I own one of your pocket mirrors and I always wished that the person behind inkjet would blog more, because I love the patterns and I love getting that once-in-a-blue-moon blog post by inkjet in my Google reader. I am shaking my head - I can't believe that's you!

Congrats on the book. Print & Pattern is and probably will always be my favorite blog.

I am so amazed that you are Inkjet designs, I always wondered why injet designs weren't featured on p&p so much because it seemed right up your street and now i realise why!
