KIDS WEEK - character design

kids week today is all about characters, and how they can be placed on a variety of products. first up its one of the UK's top childrens programmes charlie & lola illustrated by the wonderful lauren child. i love the sketchy style of line mixed with flat colour, photographs, and my favourite bit, patterns. lauren uses a computer for a lot of her work. making backgrounds from all sorts of elements – photographs, collages etc before superimposing the figures which are drawn in pencil.
next she scans the pencil drawing, cleans up the lines, and prints it out in black onto cartridge paper so she can continue to work on it with paints, collage etc. apart from the really cute tv show and books there are tons of great charlie & lola products all available here at pink milk.

  2. I've been swamped with writing work this week, so haven't been checking your blog as often as usual. Big treat for me this morning, then, when I snatched a mo' to go through all your kids' design posts. Aargh! No more writing, please! I want to draw!!

As usual, thanks for your brilliant blog!

I adore Lola and Charlie. They are hard to find here, except for a handful of books. Wish we had the TV show in Canada.

    This is just great! :)
Only last week, while visiting my niece, I saw Lola and Charly for the first time in TV. And I thought - hey, this is wunderful illustrated, I've got to find out who did it ... and then I forgot ... until now.
So, thanks a lot for doing so much research and always finding great and colorful stuff!

  8. Hello,
Mark from pinkmilk.co.uk here. thanks for the mention on the Charlie and Lola merch. We started the company in April last year when our little girl (who is mad on C&L) wanted some goodies and we couldn't find them online - at least not all in the same place. So, we went away and created that place! It's not just a business for us, we really do love Charlie and Lola and really enjoy the products. The beeb have so far licensed only very good quality merch.

One thing I'd say is that if you are after the books, go for the Orchard originals rather than the more common Puffin versions derived from the TV show. The Orchard ones are much better. They are bigger, brighter, bolder - just beautiful. That's not even a pitch - we sell mostly Puffin ones!
