DESIGNERS - mingla

stockholm based mingla design produce great patterns on fabric, oilcloth and laminated birch trays. jenny mahler uniyal and ann charlotte ridderstolpe are also stylists so its no suprise they have a stylish website to display their wares. i couldnt resist these two images below from their magazine press section, as they have such beautifully put together swatches and colours.

DESIGNER - sanna annukka

there have been lots of new additions up on sanna annuka's website - including a new pattern section to her portfolio. there's also a new "germany only" keane single out, and a series of illustrations for wallpaper magazine.

BEDLINEN - roomMate

striking red cushions (above) and kids bedlinen (below) from danish designers roomMate. apart from the 'moody mule' design they've also designed an entire 'zoo' collection of other animals.

DESIGNER - susanne schjerning

ive recently been looking at lots of designs from denmark, sweden, and finland. so for the next few days print & pattern will be going scandinavian. starting with these beautiful fabric prints by danish designer susanne schjerning.

CERAMICS - malene helbak

last week we looked at the work of mette scherning, and today we are looking at the works of her some time collaborater malene helbak. danish designer malene has a truly gorgeous style that manages to be bright and colourful whilst remaining refreshingly simple.

RICE - not by hanna

in an update to last weeks 'rice' picnicware posting post, i was asking if this print was by hanna werning. many thanks to kelly hyatt for dropping me a line. kelly regularly works with hanna , and he asked her if she had produced anything for rice. the answer was no - hence this design must be some kind of tribute to hanna's style.

it depends which way you look at it - either a homage to her influence on print fashion, or a rip-off ?

TEATOWELS - skinny la minx

have you seen these beautiful teatowels by skinny la minx on etsy ?. priced at just $10, this lovely design called eep !, has been screenprinted on to cotton hopsack by heather moore, and there are cushions coming soon. heather has been a loyal reader and commentator here on print & pattern and ive always found her blog to be really interesting as she works in so many different mediums. as well as her hand made goods on etsy heather is the queen of cut-outs and a fabulous illustrator. check here for skinny la minx on etsy shop and on blogger.

ILLUSTRATION - robinsons

in an update to the robinsons ads - thanks to lucinda c for letting us know they were illustrated by adrian johnson (see some of his other work above). if you're in the UK, you may have noticed these adverts for robinsons appearing in the press and in magazines. they're really sweet and have a touch of japanese cute about them. see the accompanying tv ad here.

CERAMICS - mette scherning

i found the work of mette scherning through marie's butik (via decor8) and thought although it is fantastically beautiful jewellery it also has a lot of inspiration to offer the 2d designer. these stylised floral motifs are just brilliant and the colours really fresh.

lovely patterns on picnicware and paperplates from danish company rice. im not sure if the platter at the top of the post and the paper cups left are by hanna werning or not ,but they do look like her style. if anyone knows whether hanna has designed this collection for rice please feel free leave a comment. thankyou :)

okido is a new bi-monthly magazine for 2-7 year olds, but it also has enormous appeal to illustrators and designers. its so stylish looking that it even confused the staff at borders who have put it in the design section instead of the childrens dept. each issue costs £3.00 in borders or click the website for subscription details.

this is a nice ideas from carlton cards - on the front with the lovely decorated cups are the words 'lets meet up' and inside '.....for drinks and a chat'.

EXHIBITION - karin akesson

currently running on a wall outside the changing rooms in top shop, oxford circus, london you'll see a lovely exhibition of works by karin akesson . the middle floor of the fashion superstore has no natural light, so my photos above are a bit of a strange colour. hence,below, ive been to karin's website to see how good they look in detail. if you're around top shop pop in and take a look, but im not sure when the exhibition ends though.

summer melamine picnicware at john lewis has a lush green feel with these 'amazon' leaf designs. as spied in the window of the oxford street store.

STATIONERY - ecojot

remember the ecojot notepads featured a couple of weeks ago, well designer carolyn gavin has sent over some great images of their fantastic cover designs for notebooks. if you missed the press release the basic points were that they are 100% recycled - so NO NEW TREES were used, they are biodegradeble - including inks and glue, and they are not made in sweat shops but in canada. i love the choices for cover designs, especially the birds and owls above. click here for the ecojot website.

PATTERN DESIGN - eurovision

if you were anywhere in europe this weekend you may have noticed it was the eurovision song contest, this year coming from helsinki, finland, and the graphics this year were the best ive seen. the kaleidoscope pattern was designed by 'dog design', and as you can see from the images above the hall was hung with huge fabric banners which were printed by marimekko. in fact the finnish textile legends printed nearly three kilometers of fabric. look closely at the design and you will see it is made from four elements : the letter f, a comma, an exclamation mark and a pointing finger. as well as decorating the hall the pattern appeared all across the city and was used for all tv graphics on the show. the UK came second from bottom by the way :( below more examples of work from finlands 'dog design'.

DESIGN BLOG - a to z

if theres one blog ive really started to enjoy lately its the marvellous A to Z. ive enjoyed reading about everything from designing the products, choosing a logo, printing the cards and setting up an etsy shop. its really fascinating, and A to Z's etsy shop has some great prints for sale, plus there are these lovely patterns to admire.

i just wanted to give a shout out for a great webshop. have you seen the cute products on sale at 'she loves stars' ?. its really hard to get hold of zakka here in the UK so this shop is pretty unique. as well as decole they stock; clare nicolson, petra boase, and lovely lovely, amongst others. if you havent visited lately or arent famillar with this site then check it out here.

the illustrations and graphics of asako masunouchi. asako was born in japan but studied illustration at the excellent brighton university.

STATIONERY - ecojot

the mirage paper co are launching a new range by carolyn gavin called ecojot. its 100% recycled and made with 100% post-consumer waste - NO NEW TREES were used to make these books. they are also made in Canada so they are “SWEAT SHOP FREE”. even the glues and inks are vegetable based and fully biodegradable. a portion of sales from ecojot will go to an environmental cause. oh and they have nice patterns too.

NEW BOOK - patterns

exciting news today about a brand new book on my favourite subject - pattern design. PATTERNS - NEW SURFACE DESIGN by drusilla cole (the author who bought us the brilliant 1000 patterns) has just been published. celebrating the recent revival in pattern design it features the work lots of contemporary designers including lena corwin, emily burningham, hanna werning, and nadia sparham. the book has 240 pages which are divided into chapters by print type and best of all its jam packed with pictures. the captions which accompany each design give an insight into the work, how and why it was created , often with quotes from the designers themselves. all in all this book is a must have addition for any designer.

WEBSITE - the pattern tester

these cool designs by lara cameron of kirin & co (see next post) were created on a fun website called the pattern tester. here you can take lara's beautiful designs and colour them to your own combinations. there are a set of available base colours and you can mix any colour for the motifs. its very clever, and useful as a quick way of checking colourways. to find out more about kirin & co see below in the next post.

you can pick colours from a wide palette and zoom in and out to change the scale.

these are the wonderful patterns from lara cameron the designer behind 'kirin & co' who created the pattern tester. based in melbourne lara has a range of fabric prints available to order through her etsy shop. apart from the pattern tester she also has all her prints on flickr, and a fascinating blog : the kirin notebook. in between all this amazing creativity she still manages a job as a graphic designer !, oh and did i mention she designs & makes jewellery too ! what a talented and energetic designer.

STATIONERY - high tide

this is such a clever idea from high tide - these spring diaries have a pattern printed on both the paper cover and the plastic cover. it makes for a really nice effect. love the choice of design too a floral design repeat that looks like a latttice type print. high tide also have some lovely letter sets and gift wrapping bags. as seen here at their daily depot site.
