book week comes to a close today and after all the 'eye candy' we've had since last monday im finishing with an educational book. several people asked if there was a book for beginners that explained how to make patterns and repeats. the good news is yes there is, its called 'pattern design' by lewis f day. this 300 page paperback book was originally published in london in 1903, and revised by day's friend amor fenn in 1933. buy this great little book if you want to learn how to layout patterns, otherwise be warned there are no colour pictures so its not really a coffee table book. the illustrations are all in black and theres plenty of text to explain the images. click here for details on amazon UK or USA. As a pattern maker and a texture artist, I would say it's one of the best books about creating patterns.
But it's not really beginners level. The vocabulary is sometimes a bit old fashion and it makes the processes difficult to follow.
But it's definitely a book I would recommand for art students.
hi del4yo, i would agree the vocab is old fashioned (it was written in 1933! ) but i find the images are self explanatory and make sense even without reading the text. can you recommend us a more modern book at all ?
Unfortunately I couldn't find anything simple enough I could recommand to my students...Such a book still needs to be written. I'm browsing a lot, if I find something new I'll tell you!

I´ll give this one a try - but why don´t you write a new book about this subject/ or a tutorial as a pdf- file - I would buy that too :)
