NEW SEASON - marimekko

Today I thought it was time to check in on the latest designs from Finnish design legends Marimekko. They have released several new homeware and textiles for Spring Summer 2020. The first print (below) is Rosarium. Designed by Aino-Maija Metsola in 2017 but now updated on home, It captures a rose garden where the fullest bloom will soon be over. Petals are already coming off in the autumn wind. The pattern shows different rose varieties, but rugosa roses predominate as they can also be found in front of Aino-Maija's home.

Below : Kasvio (Flora) and the pattern was created by combining leaves, flowers and stalks of different plants and playing with dimensions. It was designed by Lotta Maija who drew her inspiration from old books on plants and a summer cottage gardens.

Below : Also from Lotta Maija is Apilainen (Small Clover). The idea for this pattern came about on a windy day at a summer cottage. A strong easterly wind brought unusually large waves to the shore, and grass and flowers swayed back and forth in the yard.
Below : Pieni Primavera (spring) is one of the many bold floral designs by Maija Isola. Maija painted the pattern when she was living in Oran, Algeria, so there may also be a tinge of homesickness in it, a yearning to be in Finland, to feel the summer-morning dew on the grass, by a bed of pot marigolds.

And finally for the SS2020 collections we have Palsta (garden patch) pattern, Designed by Lotta Maija it features a rhythmic array of flowers and was inspired by the many flower beds and boxes at the cottage where the Lotta stayed during her summer holiday.

Below : Another lovely Marimekko collection, but this one is actually from Spring Summer 2019. Called Onni (Happiness) it was designed by Fujiwo Ishimoto. It's a really fresh and fun floral collection and whilst not being widely available at Marimekko can still be found online.

I am finishing off today's showcase with a couple of Marimekko mug designs spotted online..
