HEALS PRESS SHOW - lucienne day

most of you will probably know that we sadly lost the legendary textile designer lucienne day earlier this year. so what better time for heals to mark her prolific career through their 'heals rediscovers' series. lucienne was first discovered by heals at her graduation show and worked with them for twenty years. calyx (above) is one of the designs being re-interpreted this autumn on furnishings, fabrics, bedlinen and tableware. calyx was designed in 1951 to provide lucienne''s husband robin day with fabrics for his 'festival of britain' projects and unbelievably heals paid her 'half the usual fee' as they were convinced it wouldnt sell! its also a big year for heals as they celebrate 200 years from 1810-2010. i was lucky enough to go along to the heals press show at tottenham court road, london last week and take some preview snapshots of the collection which will be instore soon.

Wow!! Fabulous news!! What a great shame though she isn't alive to see these. She would feel very proud.

if you live in the US there is quite an amazing exhibit ongoing right now with a broad selection of Lucienne Day's work and a brief documentary type video about her and her husband's creative work in both textiles and furniture. this show is in Washington DC at the Textile Museum and also showcases a couple other mid-century female designers. it's a great show at a great museum, through Sept at least I believe.

I love her work! She was ahead of her time.

Thanks!

I would much rather see reproduction of original mid century work than see young illustrators rip off mid century illustration and put their own name on it - seems like cheating to me. Congrats to Heals for introducing authentic vintage illustration to a younger generation who only know the copycats.
